Ames, Iowa - Junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann set a school record and the Husker offense delivered timely hits, as the 16th-ranked Nebraska softball team blew past the Iowa State Cyclones 10-1 in six innings on a warm Thursday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.
Hagemann fired a three-hitter to improve to 27-11 on the season. Her 27 wins are the most ever by a Husker junior and rank fourth overall in school history. Hagemann allowed only one run and added nine strikeouts.
With Hagemann in control in the circle, clutch hitting gave her all the run support she would need. The Huskers scored their 10 runs on only seven hits. Nebraska grabbed control of the game early on a two-run double by sophomore Gabby Banda, a three-run homer from sophomore Brooke Thomason and a two-run double from junior Ashley Guile.
Thomason finished 1-for-4 and produced a season-high four RBIs in the win. Banda and Guile each finished with one hit and two RBIs, while senior Heidi Foland was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. The Huskers were 5-for-13 with runners on base in the game, while also drawing a pair of bases-loaded walks.
Breeanna Holliday took the loss for Iowa State, which fell to 21-26 overall and 3-13 in league play. Holliday (3-4) allowed five runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Nebraska jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-out rally in the top of the second inning. Guile reached on a one-out walk, before Foland singled with two outs. Banda then ripped a two-run double to the gap in left center to open the scoring.
The Huskers added three more runs in the third. Senior Julie Brechtel and freshman Taylor Edwards reached on back-to-back, one-out singles before Thomason blasted a towering, three-run homer to center field.
Nebraska used another clutch hit to take a 7-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Nikki Haget reached on a leadoff error before Taylor Edwards walked with one out to put runners on first and second. Following a pop out, Guile then ripped the first pitch she saw into the right field corner for a two-run double that scored Haget and freshman pinch-runner Morgan McCann.
Iowa State cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame when Erin Johnson lifted a fly ball just over the fence in left field for a one-out, solo home run that cut the lead to 7-1.
In the top of the sixth, Nebraska loaded the bases with none out on a single from Foland, a Cyclone error and a walk to junior Madison Drake. Haget then coaxed a five-pitch walk to score Foland, increase the lead to 8-1 and mark the end of the day for Iowa State reliever Lauren Kennewell.
Tori Torrescano entered the game and Iowa State got a force out at home before Taylor Edwards walked to bring Drake home. Thomason then recorded an RBI ground out to score Haget and push the Huskers' lead to 10-1.
Hagemann then worked around a one-out walk and a two-out double to pitch a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning and wrap up the win.
The Huskers return home this weekend to wrap up the regular season with a two-game series against Oklahoma State on Saturday and Sunday at Bowlin Stadium.
