Edwards Twins Lead NU Past SDSU

Lincoln - Freshman right-hander Tatum Edwards tossed a one-hit shutout and her twin sister Taylor drove in the game's only run, as the 14th-ranked Nebraska softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of South Dakota State with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap at Bowlin Stadium.

Tatum Edwards took a perfect game into the sixth inning, before surrendering a one-out single that would be the Jackrabbits' lone base runner of the game. In improving to 7-0, Edwar ds struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed only one ball - the lone hit - to leave the infield. She needed only 76 pitches to record her second shutout of the season.

With Tatum in control in the circle, Taylor gave her sister all the run support she would need with a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. The RBI single was the 57th of the season for Taylor Edwards, the third-highest season total in Husker history.

With the win, Nebraska improved to 34-9 on the season and moved to 30-3 against non-conference opposition. Pam Nicholson (4-20) took the loss for South Dakota State, which fell to 9-37 on the year. Nicholson pitched well, tossing a three-hitter and allowing only one run, while striking out five.

The game saw only three base runners through the first four-and-a-half innings before Nebraska cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Morgan McCann was hit by a one-out pitch and junior Madison Drake followed with a single. Then with two outs, Taylor Edwards produced her RBI single to left field for the game's only run.

Tatum Edwards faced only batter over the minimum and retired the final five batters she faced.

The Huskers wrap up their six-game homestand this weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday against Texas Tech.
