TULSA, Okla. - After this afternoon's match was delayed and moved to Tulsa, Okla., due to rain, the No. 38 Nebraska Cornhuskers got their first Big 12 win of the year knocking off Oklahoma State, 5-2. The win improves the Huskers record to 15-8 and 1-2 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma State falls to 5-11 and 0-5 in Big 12 play.
The Huskers started off the match winning the doubles point when they won two of the three doubles matches. On court No. 1, Nebraska's duo of Christopher Aumueller and Andre Stenger defeated Oklahoma State's team of Eric West and Maniel Bains, 8-3. On court No. 2, Nebraska's pair of Calin Paar and Benedikt Lindheim upset the No. 20 doubles team of Aleksey Bessonov and Rifat Biktyakov, 8-4.
"I thought we played good doubles today especially at the number one and two spots," Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott said. "They played well and I think that got things going."
The Huskers kept the momentum going when they won four of the six singles matches.
Playing at NU's No. 1 spot was No. 75 Aumueller, who defeated Oklahoma State's Maniel Bains, 6-3, 6-0. Nebraska's Paar defeated the Cowboys Biktyakov, 6-3, 6-3. Paar was playing at the No. 2 spot in the Huskers' line-up.
Also winning their matches for the Husker's was Lindheim and Sebastian Florczyk. Lindheim was playing at the No. 4 spot when he defeated Oklahoma State's Bessonov, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4. Florczyk defeated the Cowboys West, 6-4, 6-4. He was playing at the No. 5 spot in the Huskers' line-up.
Oklahoma State's two points came at the No. 3 and 6 spots in singles play. At the No. 3 spot the Cowboys Bondarenko was victorious over NU's Stenger, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Oklahoma State's Ilrja Martinoski downed the Huskers Robert Schulze, 7-6, 7-6.
After the match, McDermott believed the aggressive play helped the Huskers clinch their first Big 12 victory of the season.
"I saw some good, aggressive and physical play today," McDermott said. "I thought we held our ground and played well."
The Huskers next match will be Sunday April 17, when they travel to Austin, Texas, to take on the Texas Longhorns. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
