Palo Alto, Calif. - The Nebraska track and field team finished off the second week of the outdoor season on Saturday at the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Tommy Brinn opened his 2011 outdoor season with a solid showing in the men's 800 meters. Brinn took third overall and posted the second fastest collegiate time at 1:51.18. Nike's David Torrence won the race in 1:50.47, while Russell Dinkins of Princeton finished second at 1:50.82. On the women's side, Ashley Miller took 20th out of 81 runners with a time of 2:10.78.
Morgan Wilken then posted the top collegiate throw and was third overall in the invitational division of the women's discus. Wilken tossed a personal best of 166-11, but it was not enough to overtaken Nike's Stephanie Brown Trafton (186-10) or Jere Summers (168-11). Wilken was joined in the top 10 by teammates Amanda Latsch (7th - 158-3) and Samantha Musil (8th - 153-7).
In the invitational division of the men's shot put, Tyler Hitchler was one of three Huskers to place in the top 10. Hitchler took fourth with a throw of 55-9, while Chad Wright finished seventh (53-11) and Taylor Shapland was 10th (51-1 ¾).
Next Saturday the Huskers will compete in a scored meet at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State, as the Huskers will meet the Shockers and the Northern Iowa Panthers. The one-day meet will start at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw and the first track event will be the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 12:30 p.m. The men's 4x400-meter relay is set to end the meet at 4 p.m.
