Huskers Rebound; Down New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – After coming off of a big loss to Mississippi State, the No. 41 Nebraska Cornhuskers (13-6) rebounded Thursday afternoon to defeat No. 45 New Mexico, 5-2. Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott was proud of the way his team battled back.

 

“It was the best win of the season as far as the coaches are concerned, especially after that Mississippi State loss,” McDermott said. “It was a solid effort.”

 

For the third straight match, Nebraska lost the doubles point. All three matches were extremely close. On court No. 1 NU’s team of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim defeated New Mexico’s Conor Berg and Ben Dunbar, 8-6. The Lobos’ Phil Anderson and Jadon Phillips defeated Nebraska’s Calin Paar and Sebastian Florczyk on court No. 2, 9-8. New Mexico also won the match on court No. 3 when their team of Carl Ho and Joe Wood took down NU’s Andre Stenger and Robert Schulze, 8-6.

 

The Huskers battled back to win five of the six singles matches, and McDermott gave the team credit for their singles play.

 

“I got to give the guys credit. After losing a close doubles point, they came back and played well in singles play,” McDermott said.

 

Playing at the No. 1 spot in the Huskers’ line-up was Christopher Aumueller, who defeated UNM’s Jadon Phillips, 6-3, 6-4. NU’s Paar defeated UNM’s Dunbar, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot, Nebraska’s Lindheim defeated the Lobos’ Anderson, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

 

New Mexico’s second point and lone singles win came on court No. 4 when Ho defeated Tom Blackwell, 6-3, 6-4.

 

Nebraska’s Stenger defeated New Mexico’s Burg, 6-4, 3-6. 6-3. Also winning their match for the Huskers was Florczyk who was victorious over UNM’s Wood, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6.

 

The Huskers finish up their road trip Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they face No. 51 Fresno State in Albuquerque, N.M.
