Sheils Earns Top 10 Finish at BYU

St. George, Utah - Madeleine Sheils fired a final-round 75 to record her second top-10 finish of the year to help the Nebraska women's golf team to a tie for eighth at the BYU Entrada Classic on Tuesday.

Sheils, a junior from Boise, Idaho, climbed two spots in the final standings on Tuesday with her three-over-par 75 to finish in a five-way tie for 10th at 229 (73-81-75). Her 73 in Monday's first round tied her for second after the opening 18 holes, while her 75 was her 11th round this season of 75 or better.

Sheils led a Husker trio that included Mary Kate Bird and Kayla Knopik, who all finished among the top 30 individuals in the 82-player field on the par-72, 6,073-yard layout of the Entrada at Snow Canyon Course.

Bird, a senior from Kansas City, Mo., added a 78 on Tuesday to close the two-day tournament in a tie for 26th at 234 (76-80-78). Knopik, a junior from Papillion, Neb., closed with the Huskers' best round of the day with a 73 to finish one shot back of Bird in a tie for 30th at 235 (83-79-73). Knopik's final round was the second-best round of her career, trailing only her 72 in the final round of NU's last event at the UNLV Spring Invite, March 7-9.

Nebraska's most experienced golfers helped the Huskers register a final-round 303 on Tuesday, which was NU's best round of the 54-hole event. The Huskers closed the tournament in a tie for eighth in the 15-team field with a 932 (314-315-303). Nebraska finished four shots back of seventh-place New Mexico State, and just six shots out of a three-way tie for fourth (926) with the hosts from BYU, Illinois and UTSA.

Wisconsin won the tournament with a three-round total of 914, five strokes ahead of runner-up Oklahoma State (919), which also shot a 303 on Tuesday. Texas State finished third at 921.

In addition to Nebraska's three top 30 individual finishes, freshman Steffi Neisen added a tie for 39th after settling for a final-round 81. The New Prague, Minn., native closed the tournament at 238.

Fellow freshman Katelyn Wright added a tie for 48th at 241 after closing the tournament with a solid 77 to contribute to NU's final-round team score.

Junior Katie Keiser just missed a top 50 finish by closing at 243 with a final-round 81, while playing as an individual outside the Nebraska lineup.

New Mexico State's Demi Mak won the individual title by four strokes with a three-round total of 218 (two-over-par), including a final-round 70. Hailey Koschmann from Illinois finished second at 222, while BYU's Kelsey Vines took third at 223.

Nebraska will continue its two-tournament spring break road trip by traveling to the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., March 24-26. The two-day event hosted by the University of Colorado will tee off with Friday's opening round beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. (central). Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
