DENVER, Colo. – The Nebraska men’s tennis team went into this weekend with a goal of winning both their matches, and they did just that. The No. 32 Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-4) defeated the Denver Pioneers Sunday afternoon, 5-2.
“We wanted to come away from this weekend with two wins and keep the momentum going,” said Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott.
The Huskers started the match with winning the doubles point and McDermott believed that winning the point set the tone for the match.
In singles play, the Huskers kept the momentum going when they won four of the six singles matches. Winning for the Huskers on the No. 2 court was senior Calin Paar, who defeated Yannick Weihs, 6-4, 6-1. Andre Stenger defeated Andrew Landwerien, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Stenger was playing at the No. 4 spot in the Huskers’ line-up.
Also winning two singles points for the Huskers were a pair of freshmen. At the No. 5 spot in the Huskers’ line-up, Sebastian Florczyk defeated, 6-3, 6-1, Denver’s Alex Clinkenbeard. The second freshman to win his match was Robert Schulze who defeated Varun Gunaseelan, 6-1, 6-1. Schulze played at the No. 6 spot at the Huskers’ line-up.
The Pioneer’s two points came at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. At the No. 1 spot, DU’s No. 54 Enej Bonin defeated Nebraska’s No. 110 Christopher Aumueller, 7-5, 6-4. At the No. 3 spot, Denver’s Jens Vorkefeld won the point when NU’s No. 123 Benedikt LIndheim retired in the second set (7-6 (4), 3-2 ret).
After the match, McDermott was proud of how the team played this past weekend.
“I’m proud of the team. We found out what we’re made of today,” said McDermott. “We had to play through some adversity and I’m glad that we got the two wins.”
The Huskers will return to action on Saturday March 12, with a pair of home matches. The Huskers take on Wichita State at 10 a.m. In the nightcap, the Huskers will face the University of Missouri - Kansas City. The match against the Kangaroos will begin at 6 p.m.
