DENVER, Colo. – The No. 32 Nebraska Cornhuskers started their weekend off with a win over No. 44 UNLV Saturday afternoon in Denver, Colo. The Huskers defeated UNLV, 4-3. With the win, the Huskers improve to 8-4 on the year.
“It was a good win for us,” said head coach Kerry McDermott. “I felt that we struggled, but we found a way to win.”
The Huskers started the match off by winning all three doubles matches and thus gaining the doubles point.
In singles play at the No. 1 spot in the Huskers’ line-up was Christopher Aumueller, who defeated UNLV’s Medhi Borus, 6-2, 6-1. Nebraska’s Calin Paar was at the No. 2 spot. Paar defeated Johannes Markel, 6-1, 6-2. Also winning their singles match for the Huskers was Sebastian Florczyk. He defeated Charlie Alvarado, 7-6, 6-0. Florczyk was at the No. 6 spot in the Huskers’ line-up.
UNLV’s three points came in singles play when the Runnin’ Rebels’ Tamas Batyi defeated NU’s Benedikt Lindheim, 6-1, 6-2. Also winning for the Rebels was Rene Ruegamer who defeated, 6-4, 5-7, 14-12, Andre Stenger of Nebraska. Alex Bull of UNLV defeated NU’s Tom Blackwell, 6-3, 6-1.
“Looking back, we’re going to realized this is a solid win,” said McDermott after the match. “We beat a good UNLV team today."
The Huskers will return to action Sunday afternoon when they take on the Denver Pioneers.
“I’m looking forward to tomorrow. It should be a competitive match,” said McDermott.
The match tomorrow against the Pioneers will begin at 1 p.m.
