Nebraska Loses Tough Match to Huskies

SEATTLE, Wash. – In a match Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott called a “winnable match” knowing it would come down to the wire, it did just that. The No. 37 Nebraska Cornhuskers were defeated Saturday evening when the No. 25 Washington Huskies (6-0) handed them their third loss of the season, 4-3. The loss moves the Huskers to 3-3 on the season.

The Huskers began the match winning the doubles point. The duo of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim defeated the No. 33 ranked Huskies’ team of Martin Kildahl and Tobi Obenaus, 8-4. They faced off on the No. 2 doubles court.

Aumueller continued with his match trend of upsetting ranked players in singles play when he knocked off No. 92 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, 6-4, 6-4. Aumueller was at the No. 1 spot in the Huskers’ line-up.

At the No. 2 spot in the Huskers’ line-up was No. 99 Calin Paar. Washington’s No. 81 Kyle McMorrow defeated Paar, 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 3 spot was No. 97 Benedikt Lindheim. Lindheim was victorious over Daniel Schmidt, 6-1, 6-0.

At the No. 4 spot, the Huskies’ No. 83 Matin Kildahl, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, defeated the Huskers’ Tom Blackwell. On the No. 5 court, Washington’s Tobi Obenaus, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, defeated Nebraska’s Andrew Stenger.

On the No. 6 court, Nebraska’s freshman Sebastian Florczyk lost his first match of the year when he was downed, 7-5, 6-1, by Washington’s Marton Bots. Florczyk is now 5-1 on the year in singles play.

“I was disappointed that we won two of the top three in singles play and then couldn’t win one of the bottom three,” said McDermott. “I felt like the match was ours and it was taken away from us.”

The Huskers will open up their home schedule when they face Binghamton at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12. Nebraska will also face Western Michigan at 5 p.m. on Feb. 12.
