Madison, Wis. – In a match between two even teams, No. 41 Nebraska defeated No. 40 Wisconsin (4-5), 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Nielsen Tennis Center. The match moves the Huskers to 7-4 on the season. With the win, the Huskers are 1-1 against future Big Ten opponents.
After the match, Nebraska’s head coach, Kerry McDermott said this win was for another Nebraska head coach: Bo Pelini.
“This match is for (head football coach) Bo Pelini,” said McDermott. “He came in and gave a talk to the team. The talk was about competing and giving it your all. I thought the guys came out and competed the best they have all year.”
The match started out with the Huskers winning the doubles point.
In singles play, at the No. 1 spot in the Huskers’ line-up was No. 102 Christopher Aumueller, who defeated Wisconsin’s Marek Michalicka, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
At the No. 2 spot was senior Calin Paar. He defeated the Badgers’ Ricardo Martin, 6-2, 6-2.
“Calin Paar did a good job today. He showed a lot of leadership,” said McDermott. “He really fueled the team with winning doubles and getting off the court quick in singles play. It really got the guys fired up.”
Also winning singles matches for the Huskers were Benedikit Lindheim and Sebastain Florczyk. Lindheim played at the No. 3 spot at the Huskers’ line-up and defeated, 6-4, 6-3, Bill Bertha of Wisconsin. Florczyk played at the No. 6 spot and defeated Fredrik Ask, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
McDermott said that he expected to see his team win the match.
“Coming into the match, I expected the team to win and I’m happy to see that our guys came out, played hard, and won,” said McDermott.
The Huskers will return to action on Saturday, March 5, when they travel to Denver, Colo., to take on the Denver Pioneers. The Huskers’ will also battle the Runnin’ Rebles of UNLV on Sunday, March 6. The match will also take place in Denver. Both matches are set to begin at 1 p.m.
