LINCOLN – In a tale of two matches Saturday, the No. 41 Nebraska Cornhuskers (6-4) went 1-1. In the first match of the day, the Huskers were downed by No. 26 Minnesota, 6-1. In the second match of the day, Nebraska defeated in-state rival Creighton, 6-1.
The match against Minnesota had five singles matches go to a third set. The Huskers had a chance to win them all, but the Gophers ended up winning four out of the five.
“The bad news is, that we lost the match,” said Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott. “I have to give credit to Minnesota for upping their level of play in their third sets.”
The matches that went three sets in which the Gophers ended up winning included Sebastian Gallego defeating Nebraska’s Calin Paar, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 spot Rok Bonin was victorious over Christopher Aumueller, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4). The Huskers’ Benedikt Lindheim was downed, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, by the Gophers’ Tobias Wernet. Lindheim was at the No. 3 spot. At the No. 5 spot, Minnesota’s Brendan Ruddock knocked off Nebraska’s Robert Schulze, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3.
Winning the only three set match for the Huskers was Sebastian Florczyk. Florczyk defeated Julian Dehn, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Also winning for the Gophers at the No. 4 spot was Phillip Arndt. Arndt defeated Tom Blackwell, 6-2, 6-2.
After the tough defeat, McDermott did see two good things to come from the match.
“The good news is that I thought our guys competed,” said McDermott. “Also, the match ended soon enough for us to watch the basketball team beat Texas.”
Against Creighton, McDermott was glad to see the team comeback and play well.
“I was glad to see the team respond well and come out with positive energy,” said McDermott. “The guys worked hard and did what we expected.”
Against Creighton, the Huskers started the match off by winning the doubles point.
In singles play, the Huskers’ Calin Paar defeated Creighton’s Billy Paluch, 6-4, 6-1. Paar played at the No. 1 spot in the Huskers’ line-up.
Also winning matches for the Huskers in singles play was Robert Schulze, Sebastian Florczyk, Taylor Boney and Brandon Videtich.
“It’s always good to finish the day with a win,” said McDermott after the match. “Now we just need to keep it going into Wisconsin next weekend.”
The Huskers will travel to Madison, Wisc., on Saturday, February 26, 2011 to face soon-to-be Big Ten rival No. 40 Wisconsin. The match will begin at noon.
