Huskers Drop Decision at OSU

Stillwater, Okla. - Kaitlyn Burke had 12 points and a career-high seven rebounds, but the Nebraska women's basketball dropped an 80-57 decision to Oklahoma State at Gallager-Iba Arena on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Nebraska slipped to 12-12 overall and 2-8 in the Big 12, while Oklahoma State improved 15-8 overall and 3-7 in the league.

Sophomore point guard Lindsey Moore added 11 points, four rebounds and six assists, while freshman center Adrianna Maurer pitched in a career-high nine points and three rebounds. Senior center Catheryn Redmon pitched in eight points and a team-high nine rebounds, while senior center Jessica Periago contributed five points and four rebounds while making her second straight start on the wing for the Huskers. Freshman forward Jordan Hooper managed seven points and seven rebounds.

As a team, Nebraska hit 31.7 percent (20-63) of its shots from the field, including 26.9 percent (7-26) of its three-pointers. NU also hit 10-of-15 free throws. The Huskers outrebounded OSU, 42-38, but committed 19 turnovers while forcing just 11 by the Cowgirls.

Toni Young led all scorers with 20 points for the Cowgirls, including 16 in the second half. Young added a game-high 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Kendra Suttles pitched in 12 points and three rebounds in one five-minute stretch in the second half as OSU put the game out of reach.

OSU hit 52.4 percent (33-63) of its shots from the field, including 7-of-22 three-pointers, while hitting 7-of-11 free throws.

After opening the game with a 10-2 lead, Nebraska trailed 27-18 at halftime. NU opened the second half with five quick points to cut the lead to 27-23 on a Kaitlyn Burke three-pointer with 19:10 left. OSU answered with a quick 12-0 run on five straight possessions capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Heather Howard and Lakyn Garrison to take control at 39-23 with 16:54 left.

The Huskers worked their way to a 10-2 lead to open the game thanks to a stingy defense, solid defensive rebounding and eight straight points from Maurer and Periago.

Periago capped NU's 8-0 early run with a hook shot in the lane with 14:12, just 30 seconds after she connected on a three-pointer. However, Oklahoma State answered with a 10-0 run of its own over the next five minutes to take its first lead at 12-10 with 11:16 left in the half.

Burke tied the score at 12 with a jumper from the left wing, but OSU then went on a 14-2 surge to take a 26-14 lead with just under three minutes left in the half.

Nebraska was able to cut the halftime margin to 27-18 thanks to six straighti points from Lindsey Moore to close the half. NU hit just 8-of-33 shots from the field (24.2 percent) in the first half, including 2-of-15 three-point shooting (13.3 percent). The Huskers did not attempt a free throw in the half.

Oklahoma State struggled even more from long range, going just 1-for-11 three-point range. The Cowgirls did hit 11-of-20 two-point attempts in the first half and connected on 2-of-3 free throws.
