Irving, Texas - Junior Lora Evenstad and Senior Erin Davis were honored as Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. The award marks the first Gymnast of the Week distinction of Evenstad's career after picking up an Event Specialist award last season. With Davis' honor, she collects her fourth overall Event Specialist award, second-straight of the year.
Evenstad made her all-around debut for the Huskers at the four-team Metroplex Challenge last Saturday. The junior hit a season-high score on vault (9.875) and bars (9.85) while posting a career-high mark on beam (9.725) en route to an impressive 39.275 mark in the all-around. She is currently tied for 22nd on the vault nationally, 11th on the floor and 12th in the all-around. NU finished second in the Challenge, behind No. 6 Alabama and ahead of No. 25 LSU and Missouri.
Davis picks up her second consecutive Event Specialist of the Week honor after claiming the vault title for the second week in a row. The senior hit a 9.925, while also recording a floor score of 9.80, a season-high. Davis is currently second in the nation on vault.
Additionally, Iowa State's Michelle Shealy was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after tying for the all-around title as the Cyclones competed in a four-team meet at BYU over the weekend. The freshman recorded a career-best on floor (9.850) and bars (9.825) with marks of 9.650 and 9.775 on vault and beam, respectively. Shealy's all-around effort helped the Cyclones go undefeated at the competition and beat their highest ranked opponent, No. 16 Southern Utah, since downing No. 14 Nebraska on March 29, 2008.
The Huskers prepare for a weekend of conference duals as they travel to Columbia, Mo. to face the Tigers on Friday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hearnes Center. NU then returns home to meet Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Devaney Center.
