Huskers Fall at K-State

Manhattan, Kan. - Nebraska's offense was never able to get untracked against Kansas State's suffocating defense in a 64-37 women's basketball loss at Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

Nebraska slipped to 11-7 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12 with the loss, while the Wildcats improved to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Catheryn Redmon led the Huskers with her eighth career double-double and fifth of the season with 12 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. Jordan Hooper added 10 points and seven boards as the only two Huskers to manage double figures.

Redmon and Hooper combined for eight of NU's season-low 12 field goals, as the Huskers shot a season-low 23.5 percent (12-51) from the field. NU was also 2-of-17 from three-point range, as the Wildcats outscored the Huskers 30-6 from beyond the arc.

Kansas State was led by Brittany Chambers, who led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including a 5-of-8 effort from three-point range. Chambers added 11 rebounds and four assists to power the Wildcats.

Alina Voronenko was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 11 points off the bench, including a pair of three-pointers. While Chambers hit 10-of-15 shots, the rest of KSU's starters went a combined 7-of-31 in the game and managed just 18 points.

The Wildcats hit 35.8 percent (24-67) of their shots, but shot a sizzling 10-of-22 from three-point range. NU outscored KSU, 11-6, at the line. NU also outrebounded the Cats 44-39, but committed 22 turnovers, compared to just eight for KSU.

In a low-scoring first half of big runs, Nebraska jumped to a 4-0 lead before Kansas State answered with a 17-0 spurt to take its biggest lead at 17-4 after five straight points from Voronenko. NU answered with a 10-0 run of its own over the next four minutes to trim the KSU margin to 17-14 with 6:21 left in the half.

Kansas State then ended a five-minute scoring drought with a three-point play from Chambers, starting a 7-0 run to return KSU's cushion to double digits at 24-14 with 3:46 left. A Chambers' three with 1:48 left pushed KSU's edge back to 13 at 29-16 before Redmon scored with 1:33 left to send NU to the locker room with an 11-point halftime deficit. Redmon, who scored the Huskers' final four points of the half, had six points, five rebounds, three blocks and a steal in the opening 20 minutes.

In their lowest scoring first half of the season, Nebraska hit just 6-of-25 shots from the field, including just 1-of-5 three-pointers. NU did go 5-of-6 at the free throw line and outrebounded KSU, 23-20, but the Huskers were minus-eight in the turnover department (12-4).

K-State hit 5-of-12 three-pointers but shot just 31.4 percent (11-35) overall. Chambers led KSU in the first half with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists. She hit 5-of-7 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 three-pointers.

Nebraska cut the lead to 10 to open the second half, but KSU pushed the margin to 19 at 40-21 with 13:25 left after an 8-0 run and NU was never able to cut the margin to 15 the rest of the way.

The Huskers return home for a pair of Big 12 battles this week, beginning with a Wednesday night clash with a top-25 Iowa State. Tip-off between NU and the Cyclones is set for 7:05 p.m., with live radio coverage by the Husker Sports Network on Huskers.com.
