Huskers Return Home to Face Jayhawks
It will be a very special day this Sunday when Nebraska returns to the Devaney Center to host Kansas. First of all, it's Pepsi Pack The House Day with $1 admission to the game and $1 for small Pepsi products. It's also the day in which the Huskers will retire the jersey of one of the all-time great players in school history.
Maurtice Ivy is the No. 2 all-time leading scorer in school history with 2,131 points. She was the first player in Nebraska history to reach the 2,000-point plateau and led the 1988 Huskers to the Big Eight Conference crown and their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Ivy, the 1988 Big Eight Player of the Year, will have her No. 30 jersey retired, joining Karen Jennings (No. 51) as the only Huskers to claim the honor.
Tip-off between NU and KU is set for 2:05 p.m. with the Ivy jersey retirement ceremony to occur around 1:40 p.m., so make sure you get into the Devaney Center early so you can enjoy the celebration of honor one of the all-time great Nebraska players!
Kansas is 14-2 on the season after winning at Colorado 68-58 Wednesday night. The Jayhawks dropped their league opener in Lawrence to Texas Tech last week, with the only other blemish on their schedule coming in a 75-67 loss at Michigan on December 9. 6-3 sophomore forward Carolyn Davis has quickly become one of the best post players in the Big 12 Conference. She is second nationally and leads the league in field goal percentage (.673). Davis averages a team leading 18.6 ppg and also leads the team in blocked shots. She had 17 points and 11 rebounds in her first game against the Huskers in Lawrence last season.
5-11 sophomore guard Monica Engelman leads KU in minutes per game (33.1) and is second on the team in scoring (12.8 ppg), assists and three pointers (17). 6-2 junior forward Aishah Sutherland joins Davis and Engelman in starting all 16 games for the Jayhawks this season. She is third on the team in scoring (11.8 ppg) and leads the team in rebounds (9.4 rpg).
5-4 sophomore guard Angel Goodrich has been oft-injured in her Kansas career. She is in her sixth semester in a KU uniform, yet has not been in a game against Nebraska yet. She has started all nine games she's played in and averages 5.8 ppg.
5-7 freshman Keena Mays has taken up the slack at the point guard spot with Goodrich missing several games due to injury. Mays has started 12 games and leads the team in three-pointers (18-35) while shooting a blistering .514 behind the arc. She leads the team in assists and steals and adds 9.3 ppg. 5-9 freshman guard Diara Moore started Wednesday night at Colorado, making her first start since December 12. Moore averages 5.7 ppg.
Seventh-year Kansas coach Bonnie Henrickson has led KU to four WNIT appearances. Previously she took Virginia Tech to the NCAA Tournament on five occasions.
Kansas leads the all-time series with Nebraska 48-30, but the Huskers have won the last two games. Nebraska's season sweep last year was the first time since 2006-07 in which the Huskers took both league games from the Jayhawks. NU has won the last seven games in Lincoln.
