Sophomore forward Katya Leick  scored a career-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds in helping Nebraska defeat Northern Colorado 66-53 last Saturday night in Lincoln.  6-3 senior forward Catheryn Redmon led three Huskers in double figures with 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.  NU takes an 8-1 record into a three-game tournament this weekend as they head to Las Vegas for UNLV's "Duel In The Desert".  The Huskers will play the Houston Cougars Saturday night at 6 p.m. (central) before facing the Marist Red Foxes on Sunday and the Louisville Cardinals on Monday.  Both Sunday and Monday's games are scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (central) tip-off times.

The Houston Cougars will be the first opponent for the Big Red on Saturday night in Las Vegas.  UH is 7-1, with their only loss coming at TCU, 69-57 on December 2.  6-0 senior forward Country Taylor   was named Conference USA Player of the Week Monday.  She registered her sixth double-double of the season in a 71-59 win over UTSA last Tuesday.  Taylor ranks third nationally with 12.4 rebounds per game, and has a school-record 46 career double-doubles.  She was the C-USA Player of the Year last season and the pre-season Player of the Year coming into the current campaign.  The Cougars return a rare amount of experience from last season's WNIT qualifier, with all five starters back and nine of last year's 10 letterwinners.

Sunday evening's opponent for Nebraska will be the Marist Red Foxes, six-time champions of the MAAC Conference, including each of the past five seasons.  They return four of their five starters from last season's team that went 26-8 and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Georgetown.  Eighth-year Head Coach Brian Giorgis won his 200th career game Saturday night in a 71-55 decision over Boston University.  The Red Foxes lead the nation in fewest turnovers per game (10.7) and have a +51 turnover margin over their opponents.  Marist has a 6-2 record heading into the Duel In The Desert Tournament with losses to St. John's and St. Bonaventure.  5-8 senior guard  Erica Allenspach recently became the 17th Marist player to score 1,000 career points.  She was named the pre-season MAAC Player of the Year.

Louisville is just one season removed from a national championship game appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  After battling a depleted roster due to graduation and injuries last season, the Cardinals have five freshmen, including two who are regularly in the starting lineup.  Louisville has an 8-3 record this season, including an impressive win over then-8th ranked Kentucky.  Two of their three losses have been to top-five opponents (Tennessee and Xavier).  Fourth-year Head Coach Jeff Walz should be very familiar to longtime Husker Women's Basketball fans.  He was an assistant coach for Nebraska from 1997-2001.  6-1 junior forward Monique Reid  was named to the preseason All-Big East team and leads the team in scoring.

I cordially invite you to join Jeff Griesch and me for Nebraska Women's Basketball on the Husker Sports Network.  Our radio broadcasts in Las Vegas begin with the Husker Courtside pre-game show fifteen minutes prior to scheduled tip-off on KLNC 105.3 FM (WOW-FM) in Lincoln, KTWI 93.3 FM (Twister 93.3) in Omaha and available to our entire twenty-five network stations.  Sunday and Monday's games will also be on KWBE 1450 AM in Beatrice while Monday's broadcast can be heard on KRVN 880 in Lexington and KNEB 940 in Scottsbluff.  All Husker Women's Basketball broadcasts are also available for free worldwide on the internet at www.huskers.com.  I hope you can join us.

Go Big Red!
