The Nebraska swimming and diving team will make their way to Columbia, Mo. for the Missouri Invitational Dec. 3-5. The Huskers finished third at last year's invitational, behind Missouri and Arizona State. The invite marks the first of two invites that the Huskers will be taking place in this season, with the second coming Jan. 8 at the Citrus Classic in Mesa, Ariz. The Huskers are joined by Missouri, Missouri S&T, Boise State, Truman State and Drury.
The three-day invite's events begin with preliminaries each day at 10 a.m. with finals concluding the events at 6 p.m. the same night.
The Huskers (4-2) are coming off of back-to-back dual victories over South Dakota and South Dakota State on the road. The Huskers earned twenty first-place finishes, including relays, during the two events running over the span of Nov. 19-20. Nebraska will square off with Missouri again at the Devaney Natatorium Feb. 5, 2011.
Pool Points
+ Sophomore Ariel Weech had a fantastic last outing against both South Dakota and South Dakota State. She set a pool record in the 50-yard freestyle with a her leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay. Her time of 26.88 broke the record at the DakotaDome pool against South Dakota. The following day against South Dakota State, Weech won the 100-yard freestyle event.
+ Hayley Martin won three individual events against South Dakota State on Nov. 20. Her wins came in the the 200-yard and 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. She was one of three Husker swimmers with multiple individual wins on the day, and one of eight Huskers to earn wins overall.
+Following the South Dakota trip, the Huskers have earned four dual wins on the season, matching last year's totals. The Huskers have four duals left on the season.
Last Year's Missouri Invitational
Columbia, Mo. - The Nebraska swimming and diving team wrapped up its weekend at the Missouri Invite on Sunday in Columbia, Mo., with a third place finish. The Huskers accumulated 585 points during the three-day meet, finishing behind Missouri (1,109.5) and Arizona State (839) in the eight-team field.
The Huskers had 26 top-eight finishes on the weekend, including a third place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke for senior Kaitlin Arntz, who notched a time of 1:03.74. Arntz also had a fifth place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke and a sixth place finish in the 200-yard IM.
Other Huskers with multiple top-eight finishes include Mariah Hutchinson (500 Freestyle, 200 Butterfly), Kelsey Larson (200 IM, 200 Breaststroke) and Hayley Martin (100 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle).
Nebraska's best relay came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, where it finished fourth with a season-best time of 3:27.53. NU placed fifth in the both the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
The Nebraska divers had an excellent weekend as well, combining for eight top-eight finishes. Freshman Amy Herman came in third in both the three meter and platform dives and came in sixth in the one meter, all team bests. Sophomore D'Arcy Schmidt had a pair of sixth-place finishes in the three meter and platform dives.
The Huskers return home on Saturday, Dec. 12, with a meet against South Dakota State. The meet starts at 2 p.m. at the Devaney Natatorium.
Review: South Dakota State:
The Nebraska swimming team defeated South Dakota State 175-91 Saturday in Brookings, SD. The victory marks the fourth dual win of the year for the Huskers, who now host a 4-2 record, matching their win total from last season. The Huskers have four remaining duals on the season.
The Huskers were led by Hayley Martin who had three individual event wins on the day, including the 200- and 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Bailey Pons had two wins on the day in the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle. Ellan Dufour also had multiple wins at SDSU in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. The Huskers swept the 200-yard backstroke on the backs of Ellan Dufour, Brandie Kavalec and Rachell McClain.
Other winners on the day for Nebraska were Ashley Reiter (100-yard breaststroke), Lexie Halberstadt (200-yard butterfly), Ariel Weech (100-yard freestyle), Kristin Strecker (200-yard breaststroke) and Brandie Kavalec (400-yard IM).
The Huskers will return to action Dec. 3 at the Missouri Invitational at Columbia, MO.
