San Antonio, Texas - Nebraska (13-7-1) held a 2-1 lead under 10 minutes remaining but No. 10 Oklahoma State (17-3-1) scored the game-tying goal on a penalty kick at 83:21 and then netted the game-winner third minutes into overtime to defeat the Huskers, 3-2, in the semifinals of the 2010 Big 12 Championship on Friday night in San Antonio.
Nebraska took its 2-1 lead when sophomore Jordan Jackson received a perfect pass from freshman Ari Romero on the right side into the penalty box. Jackson, placed 12 yards in front of the goal, headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net and had the Huskers on the brink of their first Big 12 Championship final since 2002.
Two minutes later, Nebraska was whistled for a hand ball on a Kyndall Treadwell shot from just inside the 18-yard line. Whitney Wernimont took the penalty kick and sent in the game-tying goal to the upper left corner of the net with 6:29 remaining. Nebraska goalkeeper Tara Macdonald had the right instinct on the attempted save but the shot was just out of her reach.
Just under three minutes into overtime, Oklahoma State obtained a corner kick opportunity, which was flicked in by Treadwell to the far post to give the Cowgirls a 3-2 victory. It marked the first time this season that the Huskers lost a match after leading at halftime as NU was previously 9-0.
Nebraska's 1-0 halftime lead came via a penalty kick by sophomore Morgan Marlborough with 6:11 remaining in the first half. Marlborough chased down a long ball on the left side of the penalty box from Jackson and collided with OSU goalkeeper Adrianna Franch as she attempted a left-footed volley. After shaking off the injury, Marlborough, the 2010 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, blasted the ensuing penalty kick just inside the far left post for her 18th goal of the season.
Still leading 1-0, Oklahoma State netted the equalizer with 22:50 left in regulation when Sarah Brown sent a pass from midfield to Krista Lopez, who had snuck behind the NU defense. Lopez controlled the ball and took a hard shot at the near right post that Macdonald got an arm on, but snuck under to make it a 1-1 match.
Jackson, a 2010 All-Big 12 First Team selection, brought the Huskers right back with 8:39 left in the game on her header that looked to be the difference maker before OSU's late comeback. One minute later, Jackson and OSU defender Melinda Mercado had a severe collision on a 50/50 ball that resulted in Jackson being sidelined the rest of the contest.
Oklahoma State outshot Nebraska, 20-13, but held just an 8-to-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Nebraska will now await a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 64-team field will be announced Monday at 3:30 p.m. CST on ESPNU.
