Huskers Perform In Front of Full House

Lincoln- The Nebraska women's gymnastics team held an intrasquad meet Friday to prepare for the 2011 season. The Huskers worked through vault, bars, beam and floor before a full house at Mabel Lee Hall. Coach Dan Kendig was pleased with the performances of each gymnast and the great support shown by the fans.

"Today was just a matter of getting them out and having a judge look at everything," Kendig said. "The bottom line is that we just wanted to get out in front of a crowd. We were really happy with the turnout we had, to showcase our gym the way we did. We are very pleased with how it went."

The Huskers saw numerous gymnasts perform on each event. With a solid core of All-Americans returning from the 2010 season, Kendig and his staff are encouraged by the depth of the team and the experience each girl will bring. Events like the intrasquad give fans a look into what the team is doing and help the Huskers stay focused as the season draws closer.

"I think that this is exactly what this team needs right now," Kendig said. "It gets to the point this time of year; it's a going through the motions kind of thing. You can't separate the days, today we separated. I think we accomplished what we wanted."

The Huskers will hold a second intrasquad on Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. and open the season at Florida on Jan. 7. Nebraska's home opener is Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. against Utah at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. NU will look to capture its 20th conference title and make its 28th consecutive postseason appearance at the NCAA Championships in April.
