Post Game Player Quotes
September 4, 2010
Sophomore I-Back Rex Burkhead
On how the team feels about its offensive performance tonight
“I think we did well. We came out and ran the ball really well. You have the passing game going too. We still have room for improvement, but we came out and executed really well I thought at the start. (We) got a little off in the second quarter, but I definitely think we’re headed in the right direction. We’ve still got miles and miles to go.”
On the play of quarterback Taylor Martinez
“It was impressive. You got to see his speed and how he can get downfield in a hurry. He did a great job of making quick decisions and getting the offense in a routine.”
On how that picks the offense up when the quarterback is making plays like Martinez did
“It’s great. It makes it exciting, makes it fun. We’re out there bouncing around even more just knowing that the quarterback has a multi-threat about him. It’s fun.”
On if the team has an extra bounce when Martinez is in the huddle
“Yeah, he kind of picks up the energy through all of us. He is a big play threat every time he touches the ball. He makes everyone else want to make a big play.”
On his first catch in the first quarter
“It’s kind of a half-back option. I think the defense kind of messed up at first, I ended up just making a move on the linebacker to get open.”
On the offensive identity this year
“The run game out of the shotgun formation as well as getting under center and running it every now and then, it opens up the field, opens up the defense and just creates more and more holes.”
On why the offense made that shift
“I think just to mix it up, to keep the defense off balance, not really know what is coming next and switch up the pace.”
Sophomore Quarterback Cody Green
On if he knew when he was going into the game tonight
“No, I didn’t know. I was just told to be ready. I went and got ready and went in when they called my number.”
On the quarterback rotation
“I had a feeling I was going to be in second. I knew just from the way we had been working. Being a competitor, you have to have that feeling like 'I’m going to be next.' That’s the kind of mentality you need to have and I was hoping and feeling it.”
On the direction of the offense
“It is (different from when I got here). (Running the ball) is what we are good at.
Redshirt Freshman Quarterback Taylor Martinez
On if he was nervous going into the game
“I was really relaxed during the game and before the game too.”
On the emotion of playing of playing his first game
“I was just really excited to be able to get out there and play my first college football game.”
On how hard he had to work to hone his quarterback skills to get to where he is now-
“I don’t think I had to work very hard to get to this point. I don’t know. I’ve had the ability to throw the ball since high school and have always been able to throw really well.”
On his first run that went for a touchdown
“At my last high school, the first time I carried the ball I scored a touchdown. And then right when I came here I was hoping I was going to do the same thing. I was hoping to score a touchdown for Nebraska and as it happened, I just ran.”
Senior Defensive Back DeJon Gomes
On if he agreed with Pelini that the defensive performance tonight was “embarrassing”
“Yeah there was a lot of play that we need to improve on. Alignments, assignments and just some simple stuff that I think he is mainly talking about. We need to go into practice this week and fix it for the next week.”
On if the defensive play had to do with not knowing the opponent
“This week in practice we went over so much just because it was a new coaching staff. We were pretty much prepared for the most part, we just need to execute better.”
On his forced fumble that saved a touchdown
“It was a part of our culture which is effort. You see a guy running, and I’m pretty sure that I and a lot of my teammates try to chase them down just so that we can get that next-play opportunity and maybe get a 3-and-out or get a field goal attempt. I had the opportunity to make a play and I was really just going for the tackle and the ball came out too.”
