Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini
Postgame Quotes
NU vs. Western Kentucky
Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
Sept. 4, 2010
On his first impression of how the game went
"I thought we saw some good things out there. I saw a lot of things we need to fix. I thought at times I saw some really good things, but I saw a lot of things that were real sloppy. I said before - going into the game - we're not the finished product. It was obvious out there tonight. There were some positives, too."
On what (Taylor) Martinez did on the ground tonight
"I thought Taylor did a nice job running the ball. He made some explosive plays and did some really good things. I thought he managed the football team well. I thought he threw it well and was pretty efficient. I thought for his first start he did a nice job."
On how the quarterback run game factored into the decision of the three quarterbacks
"Everything factors into the decision on who you play. I think you saw tonight that he can execute any part of the game. We have three quarterbacks who are similar athletes. They can all run, they can all throw, they can all manage the team. It's a good situation."
On what a running quarterback brings to the offense and what it does to a defense
"That's why we're doing it. We try to be really multiple, make it hard on the defense, make them account for everybody. Obviously to do that in the run game, the quarterback is a big part of it."
On Martinez's poise and confidence going into his first start
"He did a nice job."
On what he does with the quarterback situation going forward
"I have said it before and I'll say it again. It's always a daily competition around here. Obviously we felt he was in the starting job. I thought he played well. I thought the other guys played well, too."
On the run defense tonight
"I thought overall defensively, I thought it was an absolute embarrassment. I thought it was coached poorly, that starts with me. I don't like anything we did defensively. There were a couple of things we did OK, but we did not play up to our standard."
On what Western Kentucky quarterback Bobby Rainey did that was causing them trouble
"We were sloppy. We didn't make calls, we didn't get lined up. We didn't play well. I can't say one thing that I liked on the defensive side. I thought we played poorly. That is not what our standard is around here."
On if he would say that Lavonte David played well
"I think Lavonte David made a lot of mistakes as did most of our other guys."
On if he saw these defensive troubles coming in fall camp
"It's the first game. We didn't play well tonight. I've seen a lot of good things defensively through camp. I think we're going to be a good defense, but I don't think we played well on defense, I don't think we coached well on defense."
