Huskers Fall to Wayne State in Game One

Lincoln - Patient and timely hitting led to a four-run third inning that propelled the Wayne State softball team to a 4-2 victory over Nebraska on Friday night in the first game of a doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium.

The Wildcats forced Husker right-hander Ashley Hagemann to throw 58 pitches in the decisive inning. Three of Wayne State’s five hits came in the four-run third inning as six consecutive hitters reached base with one out. Hagemann also walked three straight batters during that stretch, including a pair of bases-loaded walks that forced in the tying and go-ahead run.

The game began well enough for Hagemann, who struck out the side on only 11 pitches in the top of the first. She finished with a complete-game five-hitter and all four of the runs she allowed were earned. Hagemann struck out 10 batters but walked six while throwing 142 pitches.

Katie Goetzinger earned the win for Wayne State, allowing only two runs in a complete-game, eight-hit effort. Goetzinger also struck out two and walked only one.

Nebraska scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the second. Senior Julie Brechtel drove the first pitch of the inning into the gap in right-center for a leadoff triple. She was still there with two outs before junior Jamie Gay lined a 3-2 delivery into left field for an RBI single that gave Nebraska a 1-0 lead.

Wayne State answered back in a big way in the top of the fourth. After a strikeout, the next two Wildcats reached on back-to-back singles. Hagemann then walked the next three batters, forcing in a pair of runs, before Samantha Earleywine lined a 3-2 pitch just over the glove of sophomore Gabby Banda at third for a two-run single. That brought home the eventual winning run and put the Wildcats on top 4-1.

Hagemann bounced back to strike out two and quickly retire the side in the top of the fourth. The Huskers then had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the frame before an infield pop up and a hard line out to left ended the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Brechtel led off with a single ? her third hit of the game ? but was still at second with two outs. Gay then came through again in the clutch with an RBI double to left center that scored Brechtel to cut the deficit to 4-2. But the attempted rally would end one pitch later when sophomore Gabby Banda flew out to center field to end the game.

Brechtel finished 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored in the loss, while Gay was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Freshman Taylor Edwards added Nebraska's other two hits, finishing 2-for-3.
