Huskers 5-1 in Singles on First Day at Midland

Midland, Texas – The Nebraska women’s tennis team opened its fall season with a solid 5-1 singles mark on Friday at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas.

Huskers Madeleine Geibert, Stefanie Weinstein, Janine Weinreich and Patricia Veresova saw action in both singles and doubles on day one of the tournament.

Geibert received a bye in the first round of singles play before defeating Jaclyn Walker of Abilene Christian in the second round. In doubles action, Geibert and Weinstein defeated Caroline Starck and Hailey Fournier of Texas Tech in the first round and then advanced to the third round of doubles after receiving a walkover against Marie-Frederique Bedard and Carmen Sandor of Penn State.

Weinstein also started off her singles play right, defeating Gida D’Ortona of UT-Arlington and following up with another win in the second round over Jessica Jackson of Rice.

Veresova was the third Husker to advance to round three on Friday. She received a bye in the first round before defeating Alex Rasch of Rice. Meanwhile, in doubles action, Veresova and Weinreich were defeated by Janelle Cuthbertson and Christi Liles of Texas A&M.

The final Husker to compete on the day was Weinreich, who won her first match against Sarah Henderson of Penn State before falling in the second round to Lauren Megale of Arizona State. Weinreich will continue play in the consolation bracket of the tournament.

"It was a great day for the Huskers. The kids competed hard in every match," Nebraska assistant coach Hayden Perez said. "I was very proud of their efforts and look forward to the rest of the weekend.”
