Nebraska rifle coach Morgan Hicks announced the signing of two recruits for the 2010-11 season on Thursday. Sunny Russell, from Stratford, Texas, and ReAnn Wilson, from Bozeman, Mont., will join the Husker rifle program as freshmen in the fall.
"Both should be great additions to the team," Hicks said. "Both are very excited to be joining our program and the team is ready to start the year with that excitement."
Russell brings her smallbore talents to the Huskers in the fall, which will help fill the loss of the Huskers' top two smallbore shooters to graduation in Christine Costello and Amanda Jeffries. Russell finished 17th out of 89 competitors at the 2009 Texas 4-H Indoor 3-Position Smallbore Rifle Match. She also competed at the 2009 USA Shooting Air Rifle Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Russell comes from an experienced shooting family, as her brother, Rustin, will be a senior on the Memphis rifle team in the fall. "Sunny has a strong smallbore background which we need, as we lost two of our better smallbore shooters as seniors," Hicks said.
Wilson, meanwhile, is a talented air rifle competitor. At the 2009 USA Shooting Air Rifle Junior Olympics, Wilson placed 21st in the 121-member air rifle field. A 2006 Junior Distinguished Expert, Wilson was the 2008 state champion in standard rifle.
"ReAnn has a strong air rifle background and will add depth to our already strong air gun team," Hicks said.
The Huskers are coming off a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships this season.
