Guile Named Big 12 Player of the Week

Sophomore Ashley Guile was named the final Big 12 Player of the Week for the 2010 season, the conference office announced on Tuesday. The award is the first of Guile’s career, and she joins freshman Brooke Thomason as Huskers selected as conference players of the week this season.

Guile helped Nebraska finish sixth in the Big 12 with a series split against No. 14 Missouri last weekend. She came to the plate six times in the two-game series and was only retired once. Guile went 3-for-4 in the two games with a homer, three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks.

In front of a national television audience on Saturday, Guile’s three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning lifted the Huskers to a 5-3 victory. She went on to finish 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored, as her three hits and two runs scored tied career highs. She went 0-for-1 with a pair of walks on Sunday.

With a .750 average in the final weekend of Big 12 play, Guile finished with a .404 batting average in conference play. That marked the first time a Husker had hit .400 during a Big 12 season in seven years. Overall, Guile is batting .396 on the season ? a total that ranks third in the conference ? and is bidding to become just the third Husker ever to bat .400 in a season.

Guile and her Husker teammates hit the road this weekend, when Nebraska travels to Oklahoma City for the Big 12 Championship. The sixth-seeded Huskers will face 19th-ranked and third-seeded Texas A&M on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
