Edwards to Try Out for U.S. Junior National Team

Husker softball recruit Taylor Edwards is one of 42 athletes who has accepted an invitation to attend the 2010 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team selection camp, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced on Wednesday.

The camp, featuring invited athletes aged 18 and under, will be held June 10-13 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. From the camp, 17 players will be selected for the 2010 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team, which will be announced on June 15. The team will then compete at the Pan American Softball Championship in Bogota, Colombia, Aug. 6-15 in an attempt to qualify for the International Softball Federation IX Jr. Women’s World Championship in 2011.

A native of Murrieta, Calif., Edwards will join her twin sister Tatum as a Husker freshman this fall. Taylor Edwards has been one of the top hitters in the state of California during her prep career. She has been selected to participate in the Under Armour All-American Softball Game the past two years. Following an outstanding junior season in 2009, Taylor was named an EA Sports All-American and was selected as the nation’s top junior.

Edwards is currently in the middle of her senior season at Vista Murrieta High School. Entering this year, she owned a .539 career batting average with 25 doubles, 29 home runs and 107 RBIs. So far this season, Edwards is batting .435 with five doubles, eight homers and 28 RBIs in 23 games. Edwards now has 37 career home runs and is one shy of the Inland Empire record.
