Sheils Ties for 11th at Big 12 Championships

Norman, Okla. - Madeleine Sheils tied for 11th and JC Stevenson added a tie for 15th to lead the Nebraska women's golf team to an eighth-place team finish at the 2010 Big 12 Championships at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club on Sunday.

Sheils, a sophomore from Boise, Idaho, just missed a spot on the Big 12 All-Tournament team with her three-round score of 225, which included a final-round 74 on Sunday. The top 10 golfers earn All-Big 12 honors at the championship.

Stevenson added the best Big 12 Tournament finish of her career by tying for 15th at 226. The senior from Grand Island entered Sunday's final round in a tie for 10th before managing a five-over-par 77 on the 6,327-yard, par-72 layout over the final 18 holes.

Senior Charlotte Wendner added a two-over-par 74 on Sunday to climb nine spots to 47th while helping the Huskers climb from 10th to eighth on the team leaderboard. Nebraska finished with a three-round score of 919 after producing a final-round 305. Wendner finished with a 54-hole score of 237.

Kayla Knopik, a sophomore from Papillion, Neb., added an 80 for NU's fourth score in the final round. Knopik tied for 39th in the first Big 12 Tournament appearance of her career, finishing with a three-round total of 235.

Junior Mary Kate Bird settled for an 82 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 55th at 243.

Texas A&M overcame Oklahoma State's 11-stroke lead entering the final round to win the tournament title by one stroke with an 896. The Aggies fired a 296 over the final round, while Oklahoma State managed a 308 to slip into second. Texas took third at 905, while Iowa State finished fourth with a 906.

Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall claimed medalist honors and set a Big 12 Championship record with a three-round score of six-under par 210, bettering the previous mark of 212 set by her coach Annie Thurman-Young (Oklahoma State) in 2005 and Heather Bowie (Texas) in 1997. Hedwall shared the lead with teammate Victoria Park after the opening 18 holes before taking over sole possession of first place in the second round. The sophomore tied for third in last year's conference tournament - one stroke off the winning score.

Hannah Burke (Baylor) placed second with a 218, followed by Park in third at 219 and Julie Potter (Missouri) fourth at 221. Emily Talley (Colorado) and Sarah Zwartynski (Texas A&M) tied for fifth while Rosalyn Kim (Texas Tech), Punpaka Phuntumabamrung (Iowa State) and Sarah Beth Davis (Texas A&M) tied for seventh. Laurence Herman (Iowa State) placed 10th.
