Trinity, Texas - The Nebraska men's golf team tied for seventh on Sunday at the Big 12 Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club. The Huskers scored a 295 (+7) in the final round for a 72-hole total of 1,184 (+32), which tied them with Oklahoma for seventh, 51 strokes behind Oklahoma State, who won its fourth consecutive men's golf championship and eighth overall. The Cowboys' score of 1,133 (-19) set a record for the lowest team score in the 72-hole format.
The Huskers entered the day in eighth place and played well early on, taking sole possession of seventh place as they climbed to as low as four-under-par midway through the round. But NU dropped strokes on the back nine to fall into a tie with the Sooners, who posted the second-best round of the day, a one-under-par 287.
Junior Andrew Wyatt led NU from start to finish, as he ended in a tie for 17th at four-over-par 292. Wyatt scored a 74 on Sunday to earn the best finish of his career at the Big 12 Championship. Senior Brandon Crick tied for 30th after a final-round 78 left him at 297 (+9) for the week.
Junior Mike Coatman posted a 73 in the final round to tie for 43rd. Coatman finished at 303. Junior Brett Nymeyer was two strokes behind him at 305 and tied for 47th. Nymeyer started strong on Friday with a 71 and finished strong on Sunday with a team-best 72, but a 78 and 84 in rounds two and three hurt his positioning. Sophomore Scott Willman carded a 76 and finished at 306 and in a tie for 50th.
Texas Tech's Chris Ward took medalist honors with a nine-under-par 279. Ward edged out the Cowboys' Peter Uihlein by two strokes. The senior had a one-stroke lead following day one and never relinquished it on his way to his first championship.
