Lincoln --- Nebraska basketball coach Doc Sadler announced on Wednesday that a pair of talented juniors-to-be - JUCO guard Caleb Walker and point guard Kamyron Brown, a transfer from Oregon -- have signed National Letters-of-Intent to attend the University of Nebraska next year.
Walker was an NJCAA Division I first-team All-American in 2010 and will have two years of eligibility with the Huskers. He did not redshirt while attending Butler Community College. Brown spent 2007-08 and 2008-09 as a member of the University of Oregon program. He did not play basketball in 2009-10 while completing his associate's degree at Rancho Santiago (Calif.) College, and will be available to compete for the Huskers in 2010-11, with two years of eligibility remaining.
"I'm excited to add two quality people and proven winners to our program," Sadler said. "In this recruiting class, the most important thing to me was signing guys who expect to win. Caleb and Kamyron have proven it at the high school and college levels because the teams they've played on are successful. And they've proven that team goals are more important to them than individual goals."
Walker and Brown join third-team NCJAA Division I All-American Andre Almeida, who inked his NLI in the fall signing period, among the Huskers' signing class for 2010-11. Walker is also the second first-team junior college All-American signed by Sadler, joining former South Plains (Texas) standout Steve Harley.
The 6-4, 205-pound Walker was one of 10 players named to the All-American first team this season after he helped his Butler Community College squad to a 29-7 record (13-3 in Jayhawk Conference Western Division) while finishing the season ranked 15th in the nation. He was the program's first All-American since 1999 and the 13th overall while also earning honors as Jayhawk West Conference Player of the Year and Region VI Player of the Year.
A native of Hutchinson, Kan., Walker was also named the Region VI Tournament MVP after posting a season-high 26 points and nine boards in the title game, and was the NJCAA Player of the Week on Jan. 19. He had two double-doubles on the week, part of his nine double-doubles on the season. Walker also added nine 20-point contests as a sophomore when Butler earned its highest season win total in nearly 15 years. He pushed the Bulldogs to the Region VI championship and the Jayhawk West division title in 2010 while advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament for the first time since 1996.
On the season, Walker averaged 16.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while hitting better than 53 percent from the field. He also hit nearly 38 percent from 3-point range and better than 71 percent at the charity stripe while ranking second on the squad in assists and steals. In conference games, Walker ranked third in the league in scoring (16.8 ppg) and led the Jayhawk West in rebounding (9.7 rpg). He was also among the top five in field-goal percentage (51.9) while helping the Bulldogs win 16 of 17 games before heading into the national tournament.
As a freshman in 2008-09, Walker was an honorable-mention all-league performer, averaging 9.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He was named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 20 after averaging 20.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in two games, including a career-best 29 points against Hutchinson Community College.
A native of Anaheim, Calif., Brown led Oregon in assists as both a freshman and sophomore. He had 94 assists (3.1 apg) as a rookie and added a team-high 69 assists while playing in 31 games during his sophomore campaign. He also averaged 4.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in two seasons.
Brown, a 6-2, 180-pounder, ranked among the top 10 in the Pac-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.36-to-1) as a freshman while playing in all 30 contests, including eight starts. Overall, he started 13 games in his career while averaging about 17 minutes per game.
In his best game as a freshman, Brown had 20 points against Saint Mary's, just three days after posting his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 assists against Portland.
Before joining the Ducks, Brown played for coach Gary McKnight at Mater Dei High School and led the team to consecutive state title game appearances. He was rated as the best point guard in the state by Rivals.com and was ranked No. 18 in the country. Scout.com listed Brown as the top point guard on the West Coast. He averaged 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds per game as a junior.
