Lincoln - Sophomore right-hander Ashley Hagemann tossed her second shutout in as many days as the Nebraska softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of South Dakota State with a 6-0 victory in game two Wednesday at Bowlin Stadium.
On the heels of a two-hit shutout against Drake on Tuesday, Hagemann (9-8) was even more dominant against South Dakota State. Hagemann tied her career low by allowing only one hit, while striking out 12 and walking only two.
Offensively, Nebraska produced at least 10 hits for the third straight game, finishing with 11. Four Huskers produced multi-hit games, including sophomore Madison Drake who went 2-for-3 with her first two career RBIs, after entering the game with only one career hit. Freshman Brooke Thomason was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while juniors Julie Brechtel and Heidi Foland were each 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Pam Nicholson (1-8) took the loss for SDSU (8-19), allowing six runs on 11 hits in a complete-game effort.
After recording only two hits the first time through the order, Nebraska scored twice in the third inning in its second look at Nicholson. Foland led off with a single and was at second with two outs for Brechtel. Brechtel came through with an RBI triple down the right field line to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead. Thomason followed with a double off the wall in left to bring Brechtel home and push the lead to 2-0.
The Huskers added another run in the fourth. Drake reached on a one-out single before Foland laced a two-out, RBI double into the left field corner to give Nebraska a 3-0 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, Dani Broshar broke up Hagemann's no-hit bid with a leadoff double off the fence in left. But Hagemann worked around the double by retiring the next three hitters, including two by strikeouts.
Three straight hits to begin the fifth stretched the lead to 4-0. Sophomore Kirby Wright singled and Brechtel followed with another single. Thomason then scored Wright with her second RBI double of the game. With runners on second and third with no outs, a pair of ground outs put the Jackrabbits on the verge of escaping further damage, before Drake grounded a two-run single up the middle to close the scoring.
Nebraska continues its busy home week this weekend with a two-game series with 18th-ranked Texas A&M. First pitch on Friday is set for 5 p.m. and in a change from the schedule printed on posters and schedule cards, Saturday's game begins at 2 p.m.
