Lincoln - Sophomore right-hander Ashley Hagemann fired a two-hit shutout as the Nebraska softball team bounced back from a tough loss in game one to salvage a doubleheader split with a 5-0 victory over Drake in game two on Wednesday at Bowlin Stadium.
After Drake rallied from a 2-0 deficit with two outs in the top of the seventh in game one, Hagemann made sure an early Husker lead would hold up in game two. Hagemann retired the final 17 batters she faced, allowing only a bunt single to the first batter of the game and a one-out double in the second. In evening her record at 8-8, Hagemann struck out seven and did not walk a batter for the first time in 17 starts.
Offensively, four Huskers finished with two hits to pace Nebraska's 10-hit attack. Foland finished 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, while she also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch in reaching base safely in each of her four plate appearances. Classmate Julie Brechtel was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while sophomore Kirby Wright was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a hit-by-pitch. Freshman Brooke Thomason rounded out the Husker hit parade with a 2-for-4 day.
Just as was the case in game one, the Huskers jumped out to a quick lead in game two but missed an opportunity to add more. Foland blasted the first pitch of the game to left center for her fourth leadoff home run of the season. The Huskers then loaded the bases with two outs, but just like game one, they were unable to add to their lead.
Nebraska loaded the bases again with one out in the second after three straight batters reached on a single, a hit batter and a walk. But the Huskers were unable to plate a run, as a pop up and a ground out ended the threat.
The Huskers threatened again in the fourth. An error, a sacrifice bunt and a walk put runners at first and second with one out. A ground out moved the runners to second and third before a walk loaded the bases for the third time in two outs. A wild pitch scored junior Tori Tyson before Brechtel made it 3-0 when she lined a 2-1 pitch into left field for an RBI single.
Nebraska then used a two-out rally to push the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Kirby Wright led off with a single and freshman pinch-hitter Megan Southworth followed with another single two batters later. A ground out moved the runners to second and third with two outs before Foland singled to left to score freshman pinch-runner Keela Scott.
In the sixth, NU added another insurance run. Sophomore Ashley Guile was hit by a pitch to start the inning and she came around to score on an RBI single from Wright.
That was more than enough for Hagemann, who picked up her third shutout of the season.
The Huskers host another doubleheader on Wednesday at Bowlin Stadium against South Dakota State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
