Huskers Produce Strong Performances at Stanford

Palo Alto, Calif. ? The Nebraska distance and throws squads each competed in their first meet of the 2010 outdoor season on Friday at the Stanford Invitational. Both groups produced strong performances, including top-10 all-time performances by David Adams and Adam Wolkins.

After producing a breakout indoor season, Adams kicked off the outdoor season with the fourth-best 5,000-meter performance in school history at 14:06.38. Running in the invitational division of the 5K, Adams placed 18th overall and 14th among collegiate runners.

Wolkins, who redshirted the 2009 season after transferring to NU from Cowley CC, made the most of his Husker debut with a third-place toss of 223-4 in the invitational division of the men’s javelin. The toss slotted Wolkins in the No. 9 spot on the Huskers’ all-time performance list.

Ashley Miller and Jen Pancoast also opened the outdoor season on a high note, as each posted a personal-best time in their event. Miller clipped nearly one second off her personal best in the 1,500 meters, while Pancoast saw an improvement of over 26 seconds in the 5,000 meters. Holding a previous best of 4:29.44, Miller finished ninth in the top section of the 1,500 with a time of 4:28.83. Pancoast then posted a win in section 4 of the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:59.66, topping her previous best of 17:26.00.

The NU throws also excelled in the shot put, where Tyler Hitcher and Samantha Musil each added a third-place finish. A 2009 NCAA qualifier in the discus, Hitchler broke his previous shot put best of 53-3 with a toss of 55-0 1/4, while Musil threw 47-0 1/4 on the women’s side.
