Sorrento, Fla. - Sophomore Madeleine Sheils led the Nebraska women's golf team on the final day of the UCF Challenge on Tuesday by firing a final-round 74 to climb 18 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 36th.
Sheils' strong final round could not prevent the Huskers from slipping one spot in the final standings to 17th. NU settled for a 318 on the 6,301-yard, par-72 layout of the RedTail Golf Club to finish one stroke behind 16th-place Miami (944). Texas A&M won the 17-team tournament with an 893, while Georgia State took second at 895.
Sheils closed the 54-hole event at 231 (81-76-74), while junior Mary Kate Bird finished second among the Huskers with a 238 (80-76-82) in a tie for 55th. Senior JC Stevenson managed a 240 (76-82-82) to close in a tie for 64th, while sophomore Kayla Knopik tied for 67th at 241 (78-83-80). Senior Charlotte Wendner rounded out the Husker contingent in a tie for 73rd at 243 (78-81-84).
Nebraska continues its 2010 season at the UNLV Spring Invitational March 8-10. The Huskers will take on an 18-team field at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
