Florence, Ariz. - Led by Maddie Sheils' career-best round of 70 and top-10 finish, the Nebraska women's golf team posted a final-round 305 to finish in a tie for fifth at the Northern Migration Invitational at Poston Butte Golf Club on Wednesday.
The Huskers' 916 team score put them 21 strokes behind the team champion, Texas-San Antonio, who shot 895. UTSA won the close team race over Idaho (896) and Minnesota (898).
Sheils, who entered the day tied for 27th, used her two-under-par round to push her into a career-best tie for seventh at 223. Mary Kate Bird tied for 24th after a final-round 77 put her at 229. Erin Sharpee scored 78 in the final round and finished at 231 (T29th). JC Stevenson and Charlotte Wendner each shot 80 on Wednesday, and finished in a tie for 39th and tie for 88th, respectively.
NU's second-best round of the day came from Kayla Knopik, who carded a 76 competing as an individual. Knopik finished in a tie for 47th at 235. Carolyn Schorgl made three birdies on the day but finished at 81, putting her in a tie for 85th.
"We are a little disappointed with our team score, but I am happy with my round today," Sheils said. "I was hitting the ball really well today and I made some putts. It was a positive experience for me, especially with the strong wind we faced all day."
Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro scored a five-under-par 211 to win the individual title by four strokes over UTSA's Summer Batiste.
The Huskers are back in action at the BYU Dixie Classic, March 22-23, in St. George, Utah.
