Boulder City, Nev. - Three Huskers finished among the top 25 on the final individual leaderboard, as the Nebraska women's golf team finished in eighth place at the 18-team UNLV Spring Invitational on Wednesday.
Junior Mary Kate Bird led the Huskers by tying for 17th (71-73-78-222), while senior JC Stevenson climbed into a tie for 20th with a strong final-round 74 to finish at 223. Fellow senior Charlotte Wendner notched Nebraska's best round of the day with a one-over-par 73 on the 6,246-yard layout at the Boulder Creek Golf Club to vault into a tie for 25th at 225. Sophomore Maddie Sheils rounded out Nebraska's scoring lineup on Wednesday with a 79 to close in a tie for 34th at 227.
Nebraska managed a 306 as a team on Wednesday, to close the 54-hole tournament at 897, just two strokes out of fifth place. The hosts from UNLV (866) won the tournament by 12 strokes over second-place Texas (878), although the Longhorns fired Wednesday's best round with a 284. Texas Tech finished third at 886, while Baylor took fourth at 888. Missouri rounded out the tournament's top five at 895.
UNLV's Therese Koelbaek claimed individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 210, three strokes ahead of Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro (213). Ball State's Brittany Kelly finished third at 215.
Nebraska continues its spring season next week when the Huskers play host to the Northern Migration in Florence, Ariz., March 15-17.
