The Nebraska soccer team has traveled to the South to kick off its 2010 spring season, as the Huskers will take on the Georgia Bulldogs and Florida State Seminoles this Saturday in Atlanta, Ga.
The weekend marks the beginning of a 10-match spring schedule that includes seven opponents who qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The tough competition begins early Saturday when Nebraska faces Georgia at 9:30 a.m., followed by a contest against Florida State at Noon.
The Bulldogs have qualified for three straight NCAA Tournaments, finishing last year with a 15-6-1 record after they were eliminated in the second round by eventual national champion North Carolina. The Seminoles were one of the top teams in women's college soccer last fall, finishing sixth in the national rankings. Florida State was 19-5-1 and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals before No. 5 Notre Dame knocked off the co-ACC champs on its home field for an NCAA College Cup berth.
Nebraska finished last year with an 11-5-4 record, its 15th winning season in 16 years of existence. The Huskers return eight of 11 starters this coming fall, including the reigning Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year Morgan Marlborough and All-Big 12 second-team selection Molly Thomas. Marlborough will not in uniform for the Huskers this Saturday, as she is currently in Spain with the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team.
Following this weekend, Nebraska will travel to Arizona to take on another pair of 2009 NCAA-qualifying opponents, Arizona State and BYU.
