Robinson Named MPSF Gymnast of the Week

Nebraska all-arounder John Robinson was named this week's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week, the conference offices announced Tuesday afternoon. Robinson, who was recognized for the first time this season and in his career, is the first Husker to earn Gymnast of the Week honors since senior all-arounder Kyle Shanahan garnered the honors in the 2008 season.

Robinson was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week after capturing his first all-around title of the 2010 season, as he led Nebraska to a season-high team score of 342.400 for a second-place finish against Minnesota and Air Force on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010. Since NU's first meet two weeks ago, Robinson has vastly improved his all-around score from an 83.35 at the Rocky Mountain Open to an 86.20 at Minnesota. In addition to his all-around event title last weekend, Robinson earned his first parallel bars title of his career, as he tied his career-high score of 14.60 on the apparatus. Robinson also earned a second-place finish on pommel horse with a career-high score of 14.15 and a seventh-place finish on floor exercise with a score of 14.85.

Last season, Robinson battled through a broken hand to compete as NU's top all-arounder in every competition last season. His persistence paid off, as he captured two all-around titles at the end of the regular season.

Robinson and Shanahan will be in action this weekend at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev., on Feb. 5-7. The 2010 Winter Cup marks the first time Robinson and Shanahan will compete at the event during their collegiate careers.
