Huskers Open Multi Challenge

Lincoln ? The Nebraska combined-event athletes opened the Husker Multi Challenge on Friday night at the Devaney Center Indoor Track with the first four events of the men’s heptathlon. The Huskers were represented by Bjorn Barrefors, Derrell Bradford and Teran Walford in the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump.

 

Barrefors, who sits second overall after four events with 3,087 points, started the day by tying his personal best in the 60 meters with a time of 7.13, which was the second best time in the 13-athlete field. Barrefors then followed with the top long jump mark in the field at 22-10 1/2, to score 807 points and move within 27 points to Wichita States’ Chris Dickman for the overall lead. Next, Barrefors posted the second best shot put toss at 44-6 3/4 to take over the event lead. The Stockholm, Sweden, native concluded the first day of the heptathlon with a high jump of 6-4, but lost the overall lead to former Husker Skyler Reising, who finished the four events with 3,093 points.

 

For Bradford, he sat eighth with two events down after running 7.55 in the 60 meters and jumping 21-1 1/2 in the long jump. The Omaha, Neb., native then slid up to sixth following the shot put with a toss of 40-1 1/2. The sophomore improved one more spot to fifth with 2,795 points after the high jump with a leap of 6-6 1/4.

 

Walford opened his first heptathlon in a Husker uniform on the right foot as he set back-to-back-to-back personal bests. Walford ran 7.40 in the 60 meters, then jumped 19-11 in the long jump, before tossing 36-1 1/2 in the shot put. The York, Neb., native then tied his personal best in the high jump at 6-1 1/2 to end day one in eight place with 2,580 points.

 

The meet will wrap up tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the women’s pentathlon and the completion of the men’s heptathlon. The rest of the Nebraska track and field team will be in action at the Bill Bergan Invitational, hosted by Iowa State in Ames, Iowa.
