Huskers Thump Texas Tech

Lubbock, Texas - No. 6 Nebraska continued its historic streak, while ending another as the Huskers improved to 18-0 and 5-0 in the Big 12 with its first-ever women's basketball road win at Texas Tech with a 89-47 victory at the United Spirit Arena on Wednesday.

The Huskers, who entered the game with an 0-7 all-time record against the Lady Raiders in Lubbock, rewrote history by all-but putting Texas Tech away with a 26-point first half lead. Nebraska's 5-0 Big 12 start matched the 1987-88 Huskers for the best conference start in school history. Nebraska's 42-point road win was the most lopsided road conference win for NU in school history, eclipsing a 78-47 win over Kansas State at Bramlage Coliseum in 1998.

All-America candidate Kelsey Griffin continued her torrid play with her sixth consecutive double-double and Big 12-leading 10th of the season with 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. The 6-2 forward from Eagle River, Alaska, hit 8-of-12 shots from the field and 4-of-5 at the free throw line.

Junior guard Dominique Kelley added 16 points, five boards and two assists, while senior guard Yvonne Turner continued her torrid shooting from long range by hitting 3-of-5 three-pointers to finish with 13 points, four boards and two assists. Turner has hit 20-of-38 three-pointers over the past four games.

Nebraska also got huge contributions from the bench, as the Husker reserves outscored the Lady Raider subs 26-21. Catheryn Redmon led the Huskers off the bench with eight points on 4-of-4 shooting while adding six rebounds a block and a steal. In the first Big 12 action of her career, freshman Katya Leick added a career-high six points in just three minutes off the bench.

In all, 11 Huskers found the scoring column, including nine points and four rebounds from Cory Montgomery and five points, a game-high eight assists and a career-high matching three steals for freshman point guard Lindsey Moore.

Leading 60-40 in the second half, the Huskers held Texas Tech to just one field goal in an 8:20 stretch, NU outscored the Lady Raiders 27-3 to push its lead to 87-43 with 1:07 left.

For the game, Nebraska hit 55.9 percent (33-59) of its shots from the field on the night, including 7-of-16 three-pointers. The Huskers also hit 16-of-18 free throws, while outboarding Texas Tech, 40-26. NU has outrebounded 16 of its 18 foes on the year, including all five of its Big 12 opponents. The Huskers also produced a plus-seven turnover margin (22-15), completing the statistical domination.

Tech hit just 21-of-54 shots (38.9 percent), while going 0-for-12 from long range. In Big 12 road action (at Iowa State - 2-12; at Baylor 0-10) Nebraska has held its opponents to just 2-for-34 three-point shooting on the year. The Lady Raiders also struggled to just 5-of-18 shooting at the line.

Christine Hyde was the only Lady Raider to manage double figures with 15 points, as Tech's top three scorers entering the game, Kierra Mallard (2), Jordan Murphree (6) and Ashlee Roberson (8) combined for just 16 points.

The Huskers got off to a strong start, jumping to an 11-7 lead before adding a 13-2 surge to build a 24-9 edge after a Griffin layup with 10:14 left in first half. Tech slowed Nebraska's momentum with back-to-back baskets by Tilmila Martin and Hyde.

Nebraska then responded with an even bigger spurt, erupting on a 15-0 run that included six points from Griffin to take a 39-13 lead after Griffin's final points of the run with 2:40 left in the half. Griffin finished the half with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Martin stopped the run and snapped a seven-minute scoring drought by the Lady Raiders, before Montgomery answered with a basket to make it 41-15 with 1:48. Montgomery finished the half with nine points and two rebounds, while Kelley and six points and Turner pitched in five points. The Huskers also got solid contributions off the bench with four points and two rebounds from Texas native Catheryn Redmon, and a three-pointer from Lubbock native Layne Reeves. Nicole Neals added two points and an assist in the opening half, while freshman starting point guard Lindsey Moore quarterbacked NU's offense with six assists.

Tech salvaged some momentum heading into the locker room by scoring the final six points of the half, but Nebraska still carried a 41-21 halftime lead over the Lady Raiders at the United Spirit Arena.

Nebraska shot 51.6 percent (16-31) from the field, including 3-of-8 three-pointers, while knocking down all six of its free throw attempts. The Huskers also controlled the glass, carrying a 17-13 rebounding edge at the half, while also posting a plus-eight turnover margin (15-7) in the opening 20 minutes.

Tech hit 10-of-23 shots (43.5 percent) of its shots, while going 0-for-5 from long range and just 1-of-5 at the line.

Nebraska continues Big 12 Conference road action on Saturday, when the Huskers travel to Boulder to clash with Colorado. Tip-off between the Huskers and Buffaloes at the Coors Events Center is set for 4:30 p.m. (central) with live television coverage provided by Fox Sports Rocky Mountain. A live radio broadcast will be available on the Husker Sports Network, including 98.1 KFGE in Lincoln, 93.3 KTWI in Omaha and 880 KRVN in Lexington.
