Lincoln - Former Nebraska defender Carly Peetz (2006-09) will become the 15th Husker to play professional soccer, as she was selected by the Boston Breakers in the sixth round of the 2010 Women's Professional Soccer Draft, held Friday in Philadelphia. Entering its second year, the WPS is the top women's soccer league in the United States.
Peetz' selection follows an exceptional career at Nebraska, where she was a three-time All-Big 12 honoree and 2009 NSCAA All-Central Region pick. The defender will team up with another former Husker in Boston, as former NU All-American Christine Latham will begin her second season with the Breakers in 2010. Former Nebraska soccer standouts Karina LeBlanc and Sharolta Nonen are also active in the WPS with the Los Angeles Sol.
Peetz finished her Husker career as one of the best defenders in school history. In addition to all-conference and all-region honors for her defense, Peetz showcased her offensive skill with four goals and three assists in her 2009 senior season. She totaled nine goals and seven assists (25 points) in four years with the Huskers, while starting all 79 games of her NU career, a total that ranks eighth on the all-time chart.
With the fifth pick in the sixth round, Peetz was the 52nd player taken overall in the 2010 WPS Draft.
