Griffin Earns Big 12 Honor

Lincoln ? After an electrifying performance in Nebraska's win over LSU on Sunday, senior Kelsey Griffin captured her first Big 12 Player-of-the-Week award of the season, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.

Griffin, a 6-2 forward from Eagle River, Alaska, powered Nebraska to a 77-63 win over No. 5 LSU on Sunday by scoring 30 points and matching her career high with 14 rebounds. Griffin was a perfect 7-for-7 in the first half and pulled down six rebounds, as Nebraska jumped out to a 21-4 lead early against the preseason SEC favorites. Griffin’s 16 points and six rebounds in the opening period allowed NU to carry a 41-34 lead into the locker room against a previously unbeaten Tiger squad that had allowed just 44 points per game coming into the contest.

Griffin continued to wow the largest home non-conference crowd (7,717) in school history, by finishing off the Tigers with 12-of-19 shooting from the field. Although Griffin went just 5-for-12 from the floor against LSU in the second half, Nebraska scored on 17 of the 19 possessions that Griffin shot the ball. She also hit 6-of-9 free throws, while adding an assist, a steal and a block while committing just one turnover in a career-high 36 minutes.

Griffin’s performance gave Nebraska its best start and longest winning streak in school history at 11-0, while supplying NU with just its second-ever win over a top-five team, joining a triple-overtime win over then-No. 2 and eventual national champion Baylor in 2005.

It was Griffin’s second 30-point performance of the season and third of her career, while her 14 rebounds marked her third straight game and sixth game this season with double-figure boards. She increased her season averages to 17.9 points and a Big 12-leading 9.9 rebounds per game. She also continues to lead NU with 2.0 steals per game and drew her team-leading ninth charge of the season against the Tigers. Griffin ranks 13th nationally with her 61.0 field goal percentage.

The award marked her fourth career Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honor, and she was also a two-time Big 12 Freshman of the Week in 2005-06. Baylor’s Brittney Griner won the league’s Newcomer-of-the-Week award.
