Huskers Run Past Lopers, 89-47

Lincoln - Senior forward Kelsey Griffin notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, as one of five Huskers in double figures in the Nebraska women's basketball team's 89-47 victory over Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Griffin, helped lead improved defensive and rebounding efforts, as Nebraska beat UNK on the glass, 44-28, and forced 29 turnovers while committing just 20 miscues, including seven in the second half.

Senior forward Cory Montgomery and junior guard Dominique Kelley each led NU's scoring efforts with 13 points, while junior center Catheryn Redmon added a big effort with 10 points, seven rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals in just 13 minutes of game action. Senior guard Yvonne Turner rounded out the Huskers in double figures with 10 points and four assists.

True freshman point Lindsey Moore also played a solid game with all eight of her points in the first half, while adding five assists and three rebounds, as all 13 Huskers who played found the scoring column.

"I thought our effort was good and we showed some improvement in some areas," Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. "We still have a long way to go."

Nebraska hit 53.8 percent (35-65) of its shots from the field, including 6-of-15 three-pointers (40 percent). NU also connected on 13-of-21 free throws. Defensively, the Huskers held the Lopers to just 28.3 percent (15-53) shooting, including just 3-of-10 three-pointers. UNK did hit 14-of-16 shots from the foul line.

Moore scored eight first-half points, including a pair of three-pointers, while adding two assists to help the Huskers take a 38-21 lead into the locker room at the half. Montgomery added eight of her own in the first half, while Kelley pitched in seven points. Griffin controled the glass for NU, ripping down eight boards while pitching in five points. Redmon also came off the bench to score four points and grab three offensive rebounds in the opening half.

Rebounding played a major role in Nebraska's 17-point halftime lead, as the Huskers outrebounded the Lopers, 24-9 in the first half. NU hit 15-of-32 shots from the field, including 8-of-10 shooting to open the contest. NU hit 4-of-9 three-point attempts in the first half and 4-of-6 free throws.

The Huskers held UNK to just 7-of-22 shooting (31.8 percent), including 1-of-4 from three-point range, while connecting on 6-of-7 free throws.  Both teams committed 13 first-half turnovers.

Debi Johnson led the Lopers with 13 of her game-high 18 points in the opening half. Lee Ann Jamison added 10 points, while Vanessa Leeper pitched in eight points for a UNK squad that was able to dress only eight players because of plethora of preseason injuries.
