Huskers Crush Cougars, 107-54

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's basketball team tied a school record with 59 first-half points and rolled to a 107-54 victory over Washington State on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 4-0 with all four wins by 20 or more points. Washington State slipped to 1-2 on the season, including a seven-point loss at Kansas State on Friday, when the Cougars trailed by just three while shooting two free throws with one minute left.

While the Cougars pushed the Wildcats to the limit, Nebraska cruised to one of the most lopsided wins in school history by producing the 25th 100-point scoring game in school history. Senior guard Yvonne Turner, who scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 15 minutes led an NU three-point barrage with four three-pointers for the second straight game, as NU just missed a school record by hitting 11-of-23 three. Turner, who hit four threes for the second straight game, is 14-for-26 from long range so far this season.

Six Huskers produced double figures, including senior forward Kelsey Griffin who put up 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals in just 14 minutes, while sophomore Harleen Sidhu exploded off the bench for a career-high 10 points in her first three minutes on the floor. Sidhu added three rebounds in just seven minutes of game action.

Junior guard Dominique Kelley finished with 13 points, including 12 to lead the Huskers in the first half. Washington native Lindsey Moore added 10 points, four assists, three rebounds, a steal and her first career block. Senior point guard Nicole Neals added 10 points, five assists, a steal and her second career block.

All 13 Huskers who saw action scored in the contest, including eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for junior center Catheryn Redmon, and seven points and four rebounds for senior guard Kala Kuhlmann. Senior forward Cory Montgomery managed six points, five rebounds and an assist in just 18 minutes, while freshmen Meghin Williams and Katya Leick each scored four points. Junior center Periago pitched in two points and six rebounds, while redshirt freshman Layne Reeves rounded out the scoring with two points and four rebounds.

Nebraska's 107-point total tied for the 11th-highest scoring game in school history, while the 53-point margin was also the 11th-most lopsided win in the NU record book.

As a team, the Huskers hit 52.7 percent (39-74) of their shots from the field, including 47.8 percent of their three-point tries. The Huskers also connected on 18-of-28 field goals and outrebounded Washington State, 59-38. NU committed just 12 turnovers in the game, while forcing 17 miscues by the Cougars.

Nebraska held Washington State to just 25.6 percent (20-78) shooting for the game, including just 17.9 percent (7-39) in the first half. WSU connected on 6-of-21 three-pointers and 8-of-12 free throws. Freshman KiKi Moore led the Cougars with 13 points, while redshirt freshman Katie Grad pitched in 12 points.

Nebraska's 59-point first-half eruption matched a 16-year-old school record set against InterAmerican on Dec. 21, 1993. The Huskers hit 21-of-35 shots from the field (60 percent), including 5-of-11 three-pointers (45.5 percent) in the first half. Nebraska's first-half margin could have been significantly greater, but the Huskers hit just 12-of-21 first-half free throws. The Huskers outrebounded WSU, 31-19, in the first half and produced a 9-5 turnover edge in the first 20 minutes.

Kelley produced double figures for the third straight game scoring 12 first-half points, including a pair of three-pointers in the first 2:10 as NU jumped to a 12-4 lead by hitting four straight three-pointers to open the game.

After carrying a 12-6 lead into the first media timeout, Nebraska went inside and exploded on a 15-0 run over the next 4:32 to take a 27-6 lead with 11:22 left.

By the following media timeout, Nebraska's lead had grown to 38-13 after six straight points from Griffin. Soon after, Griffin was called for her second foul. Despite playing just eight first-half minutes, Griffin had 10 points, five rebounds and two steals. Turner, Nebraska's leading scorer on the season, also played just four first-half minutes because of foul trouble.

Freshman point guard Lindsey Moore, a native of Covington, Wash., also produced the first double-figure scoring performance of her career with 10 first-half points to go along with three assists, three rebounds and a steal. Overall, Nebraska had nine players score in the first half, including seven points apiece off the bench from Neals and Kuhlmann.

The Huskers head to California for a pair of game over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend at the Saint Mary's Hilton Tournament. Nebraska opens the two-game tournament against UALR, which return five starters from a team that went 26-7 a year ago. The Huskers tip-off with the Trojans on Friday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. (Central) in Moraga, Calif.
