Lincoln - The Nebraska football team took to the Hawks Championship Center on Monday afternoon for a 90-minute practice in preparation for this weekend’s game against Baylor. The Huskers put in a solid practice, as it focused on execution and moving forward after last weekend’s 9-7 loss to Iowa State.
“The team is fine,” Nebraska Coach Pelini said. “We talked about what happened. You can look in the past, you can be disappointed and feel sorry for yourself because you talk about what-ifs. We’re in a very similar situation like we were a year ago and you have to fight your way back. That’s the attitude we’re taking. We’ll go back to work. It’s all about hard work at this point and earning what you get the rest of the way.”
After
committing eight turnovers against Iowa State last weekend, the Huskers paid
special attention to its regular ball security drills for the first 20 minutes
of today’s practice.
“It’s nothing different,” Pelini said. “We do ball security every week.
Obviously, when something happens like it did the other day, it needs emphasis.
You can’t emphasize it enough. It’s something we talk about all of the time.
I’m embarrassed by what happened, so it’s going to continue to be
overemphasized if anything.”
With several of Nebraska’s wide receivers on the injured list, this week’s practices will also focus on a strong competition for the starting wide receiver positions.
“The competition is wide open and we’re looking for somebody to step up and make plays,” Pelini said. “That’s where we are and that’s what we’re looking to do. We’re creating as much competition to allow that to happen.”
The Huskers will travel to Waco, Texas, for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff on Saturday. NU is on the road for the first time in several weeks, with its last road game resulting in a 27-12 win over Missouri. Coach Pelini and the Nebraska football team are anxious to take on Baylor no matter where the location.
“I always like playing at home, but it’s a different challenge on the road, a different mentality,” Pelini said. “It is what it is. We’re ready to play football and play Baylor. I don’t care where it is, where we play them. We’re going down to Waco and we have a job to do and we’re going to get it done.”
Baylor enters this weekend’s competition with a 3-4 overall record and a 0-3 record in the Big 12, while Nebraska holds a 4-3 record on the season, 1-2 in the Big 12.
Nebraska will continue its preparations for Baylor on Tuesday afternoon.
