Lincoln ? Back-to-back homers from junior Julie Brechtel and sophomore Ashley Guile fueled a nine-run fourth inning and propelled the Nebraska softball team to a 12-1 scrimmage victory over Nebraska-Kearney in the first of two games Wednesday night at Bowlin Stadium.

The scrimmage went a full seven innings, with sophomore Ashley Hagemann earning the victory. Hagemann threw 4.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out eight and walking none. Junior Tori Tyson came on in relief, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing four hits.

Kirstie Hiatt took the loss for UNK, allowing 12 runs (eight earned) on 14 hits in 3.1 innings. Dani Mowinkel pitched well in relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing only two hits.

Nebraska jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Nikki Haget led off with an infield single before freshman Gabby Banda lined a single to center. After Brechtel lined out to first, Guile brought home Haget with the game’s first run on an RBI single to center. Junior Tori Tyson then made it 3-0 with a two-run bloop single to center.

Cassie Keck immediately cut into the lead in the top of the second when she launched an 0-1 offering over the wall in left for a leadoff homer.

After leaving the bases loaded in the third inning, the Huskers did not miss another bases-loaded chance in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Kirby Wright led off the frame with a bloop single to right before an error put runners at first and second. Haget then coaxed a walk and with the bases loaded, Banda lined a 2-1 pitch into left to score freshman pinch-runner Keela Scott and fellow freshman Brooke Thomason.

Leading 5-1, Brechtel blasted the next pitch over the fence in right for a three-run home run. Two pitches later, Guile followed with another shot to right to push the lead to 9-1. Hagemann then doubled off the wall in center before Tyson reached on an error to put runners on the corners with still nobody out. Senior Whitney Barrett gave Nebraska its 10th run, when her fly ball to right was deep enough to score sophomore pinch-runner Jamie Gay.

After UNK recorded the second out, Thomason capped the inning with a two-run single to right to put the Huskers in front 12-1.

Tyson came on to pitch in the top of the fifth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the Lopers off the board.

The Nos. 2, 3 and 4 hitters in the Husker lineup did much of the damage in the offensive explosion, combining to go 7-for-12 with seven RBIs. Guile went 3-for-4 with two RBIs out of the cleanup spot, while Banda and Brechtel both finished 2-for-4. Banda scored twice and drove in a pair out of the No. 2 spot, while Brechtel finished with a game-high three RBIs. Thomason had a fine Husker debut, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Hagemann added a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 effort and Tyson produced two RBIs.
