Lincoln -- A trio of former Huskers received good news on Wednesday, as they were assigned to the Arizona Fall League. Former Husker pitchers Steve Edlefsen, Tony Watson and Thad Weber were all selected to participate in the league for the upcoming season.
Weber will pitch for the Peoria Javelinas, while Tony Watson and Steve Edlefsen have been assigned to Scottsdale Scorpions. The Arizona Fall League, which is a showcase for some of the top prospects in professional baseball, runs for six weeks and begins on Oct. 13.
Edlefsen has put together a dominant 2009 campaign, jumping three levels within the Giants organization. He is a combined 8-1 with eight saves and a 1.72 ERA in 44 outings, fanning 68 over 62.2 innings. Most recently, he has pitched at Triple-A Fresno, going 5-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 18 games. Edlefsen, who began his Nebraska career as an infielder before he was converted to a pitcher in 2007, has fanned 20 over 23.1 innings and held hitters to a .190 average. He was a 16th round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 2007.
Weber is currently in Double-A Erie in the Eastern League, where he is 7-3 with a 3.95 ERA in 12 starts. The highlight of Weber’s professional career came last Saturday when Weber tossed a no-hitter, the first since 1995 for the Erie franchise. Weber fanned 10 and allowed only one base runner in an 88-pitch no-hitter. Weber, who was drafted by the Tigers in the 16th round of the 2008 MLB Draft, has compiled an 11-7 mark this year.
Watson will look to get healthy in Arizona as he has missed most of the 2009 season because of an injury. He is 0-3 with an 8.22 ERA in Double-A Altoona for the Pirates organization. Watson was a ninth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2007.
