Fans Enjoy the Bidding Process for 1962 Throwback Uniform Auction

Nebraska football fans have embraced the school's first-ever throwback uniform auction and seem to be enjoying the bidding process on Huskers.com.

To help celebrate Nebraska's NCAA-record 300th consecutive sellout Sept. 26 in Memorial Stadium, all uniforms worn by the Huskers in the Louisiana-Lafayette game are being auctioned to the highest bidder.

Michael Stephens, Assistant Athletic Director for Licensing, Marketing and Concessions, said each of the jersey sets (which include jersey, pants and helmet) have received the minimum bid of $500.  The minimum bid equals Nebraska's expenditures on the sets with helmets costing athletics $300 each, authentic game-day jerseys wholesaling at $140 each and pants at $60 each.

"The 300th sellout is testament to the loyalty of our fans," Stephens said. "And just like our fans get completely involved in our games, they seem to be enjoying the process of this unique opportunity to purchase game-worn uniforms, celebrating the 1962 season."

Numbers 1 through 99, with the exception of 20, 60 and 64 (which are permanently retired) and 61, 72 and 97 (not currently assigned) are available for auction.  Although some players wear duplicate numbers for Husker games, only one uniform set per number will be auctioned with the successful bidder deciding which uniform set is most preferred.

The throwback uniforms, produced by adidas, are replicas of the home uniforms, helmets and pants worn during the 1962 season, when legendary Coach Bob Devaney posted a 9-2 record in his first season as head coach at Nebraska. The sellout streak began that season when Nebraska hosted Missouri in the fifth home game of the season on Nov. 3, 1962.

All fans will also have the opportunity to purchase replica jerseys with custom numbers at Huskers Authentic Team Store for $109.99 each.

All bidders must first apply for a bidding number on Huskers.com. Ticket and donor account numbers will not work for this process. A $15 shipping fee will be added to the winning bid.  Funds generated from this auction will be directed to operational costs to support all University of Nebraska student-athletes.

The auction will close on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009.
