Husker Receiving Corps Battling for Playing Time

The Nebraska football team hit the practice field for the first of two scheduled practices on Friday as they continue preparations for their season opener against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5.  The Cornhuskers practiced for a little over two and a half hours in full pads on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields northeast of Memorial Stadium. Friday marks the last two-a-day of fall camp for the Huskers and assistant head coach-offense and receivers coach Ted Gilmore said he liked what he saw out of the players during the first practice session of the day.

"We work a little coming-out drill, a little four-minute drill, so we're doing a lot of situational stuff," Gilmore said. "The tempo was good. The execution could go a little bit better but for the first go, not bad."

With only two more practices on tap for the remainder of fall camp, Gilmore said many of his receivers are working hard to earn a spot on the receiving corps.

"You have a couple more practices before you make a lot of decisions," Gilmore said.  "There are some guys, where those last two practices are going to make a difference.  (There are) a few that has separated themselves and some that are still teeter-tottering back and forth."

One receiver that Gilmore said has solidified himself as a starter is junior Niles Paul.  The Omaha native looks to take over the No. 1 receiver spot after catching 23 passes as a sophomore for 214 yards.

"Niles has had a tremendous camp," Gilmore said. "Niles right now no question is a starter.  It's his job to lose."

The Huskers will return to the practice field for their second practice of the day Friday afternoon.  NU will conclude fall camp with a practice on Sunday before starting classes on Monday. Check back to Huskers.com for more updates on the Nebraska football team.
