Women's Basketball

Griesch's The Word (Aug. 6)

Hello Husker Fans,

Ticket sales for Nebraska women's basketball are off and running for 2009-10 with the Athletic Ticket Office taking a healthy number of requests for single-game tickets when the tickets went on sale Wednesday. I believe single-game tickets were first available in early to mid-October last year, so opening-day ticket sales show an early interest in Husker women's basketball.

While the Huskers are selling tickets to their home games right now, they may have received an unintended schedule upgrade today. Nebraska was scheduled to open the Saint Mary's College Hilton Classic against William & Mary on Friday, Nov. 27, before playing the hosts from Saint Mary's on Nov. 28.

Apparently, William & Mary has been replaced by Arkansas-Little Rock in the tournament, which marks a nearly 100 spot upgrade in the final regular-season CollegeRPI.com rankings from 2008-09. The Tribe finished at 167 in the RPI with a 14-17 record, while UALR finished No. 70 in the RPI with an impressive 26-7 record.  UALR has five starters and 10 letterwinners returning from a team that posted its first-ever win over a top-25 school with a win over Oklahoma State in early December 2008.

The Trojans, who finished first in the Sun Belt Conference West Division with a 16-2 league record, earned a trip to the Postseason WNIT in 2009. UALR, which opens the season against Oklahoma State this year on Friday, Nov. 13, will also play in the Preseason WNIT, then take on Rice before heading to the San Francisco Bay Area for the Saint Mary's Tournament.

As an interesting side note, UALR's athletic director is former Husker Associate Athletic Director for External Operations Chris Peterson. Born in Omaha, Peterson served as Nebraska's Director of Athletic Development from 1992 to 1996. He then served as the vice president of the Pinnacle Sports Network before joining the Creighton athletic administration while NU Coach Connie Yori was with the Jays in 1997. That same year, he served as a pallbearer at Bob Devaney's funeral service in Lincoln. Peterson left Creighton to become UALR's athletic director in 2000.

Go Big Red!
