By Matt Coatney, Husker Sports Network Radio Play-by-Play
I always know when Connie Yori's son Lukas is about to have a birthday. It always conicides with the week the Huskers host Day Camp for young girls, such as this week. When my daughters Jill and Hannah were younger, they absolutely loved going to Husker Day Camp.
One of my all-time favorite Day Camp stories was the year in which Connie was due to deliver Lukas on a Friday, one day after Day Camp ended. You'd think that she'd be home taking it easy. Not Coach Yori. The image of a very pregnant Connie Yori walking very quickly with a whistle in her mouth up and down the floor, telling my daughters to "set a screen" or "get in a stance" the day before Lukas was born is forever burned in my head.
I absolutely LOVE the non-conference schedule that was recently released. The matchup with LSU is obviously very attractive, but don't overlook the matchup at Miami. Hurricane Coach Katie Meier is quietly assembling a very talented team, led by Shenise Johnson and incoming freshman Morgan Stroman.
Stroman was named to the PARADE Magazine's Third-Team All-American squad, just like our own outstanding incoming freshman Lindsey Moore. Plus, from an extremely selfish standpoint, I get to go to my favorite town on the planet, San Francisco. I really do promise to try and discuss at least SOME of the two basketball games we're playing on the radio while we're in the Bay Area, but it will be tough. I so love that area of the world that I may just do 2 1/2 hours on where I went sightseeing.
If you're a Husker fan anywhere in the country, this is a great schedule because we're going to every spot in the country. Live in the northwest? San Francisco is a quick trip. Southwest? We're coming to Vegas. Southeast? We're playing in Miami. Northeast? We're at Vermont. I'm really fired up about that Vermont trip also. Anytime we can play in a state I've never been to, I get amped up just a little more. (Plus, Vermont is pretty good, believe me).
